Guwahati: The Assam Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at Lok Sewa Bhawan on Sunday evening, approved a series of key decisions, including land transfer for a new airport, implementation of a logistics policy, and major educational reforms.

In a significant move, the Cabinet approved the transfer of 3,000 bighas of land at Doloo Tea Estate in Silchar to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for the construction of a greenfield airport. The decision will now enable the proposal to move to the Union Cabinet for final approval.

The state government also cleared the allotment of land to 1,200 families under Mission Basundhara, aimed at resolving land-related issues across Assam.

To boost the state’s economic infrastructure, the Cabinet approved the Assam Logistics and Warehousing Policy, 2025, with the goal of transforming Assam into a major logistics hub in the Northeast.

In the education and skill development sector, the Cabinet approved a joint project at Assam Engineering College in collaboration with Dassault Systems India Pvt. Ltd.

The Rs 243-crore project will cover 5,000 sq. ft. and offer specialised courses in Aerospace & Defence, Automotive, and Electric Vehicles.

Dassault Systems will invest Rs 200 crore, while the Assam government will contribute Rs 43 crore.

The Cabinet also approved compensation for 884 families after the government acquired their land for constructing the four-lane National Highway in Dima Hasao district.

Further, the state government granted administrative approval to build Assam’s second Sainik School at Longvaku in Karbi Anglong at a cost of Rs 35 crore.

Of this amount, the Ministry of Defence will fund 80%, while the Assam government will contribute the remaining 20%.

In a major academic decision, the Cabinet approved the introduction of Assam’s History and Geography as compulsory subjects in Classes VI, VII, and VIII.

The move follows recommendations made by the High-Level Committee headed by retired Justice Biplab Kumar Sharma, formed for the implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord.
