Assam: Burhi Dihing embankment breached, extensive flooding reported in Dibrugarh

Dibrugarh: The Dibrugarh district in Assam is facing extensive flooding after the embankment of the Burhi Dihing River breached in the Hatibondha area of Tengakhat on Tuesday afternoon.

This caused water to overflow, affecting several areas including Borbam Villages 1 & 2, Na-Khangia, Hatibandha, Puroni Khangia, Tamuli Khat, Deobil, and others. Local authorities are assessing the damage and coordinating relief efforts for the affected residents.

According reports, over 141 villages and 38,000 people have been affected by the floods.

The district administration has set up 17 relief camps, sheltering over 2,600 people. Over 52,000 animals have been affected as well. SDRF and NDRF teams have rescued 390 people from the flooded areas.

In a separate incident, the Indian Air Force rescued thirteen fishermen who were stranded on a sandbar in the Brahmaputra River near Dibrugarh for three days. A strong current prevented an SDRF team from reaching them earlier.

Meanwhile, a major crack has appeared on the Gammon Bridge over the Buri Dihing River near Khowang, raising concerns about a potential bridge collapse.

The movement of heavy vehicles on the bridge may be restricted soon.
