Assam: Brahmaputra erosion threatens Tinsukia's Dighaltarang Tea Estate; 1,400 families at risk

Doomdooma: Riverbank erosion along the Brahmaputra entering through the Dangari channel is affecting Dighaltarang Tea Estate in Assam’s Tinsukia district.
The erosion is impacting infrastructure and the livelihoods of more than 1,400 families.
Reports say about 35.48 hectares of plantation land have already been lost, affecting tea bushes and production.
“The erosion is advancing rapidly, and if urgent action is not taken, the factory, hospital and workers’ quarters could soon be lost,” said a workers’ leader.
The situation has worsened in the ‘Purana Line’ residential area, where some sections have already been affected. Other parts of the estate remain under risk, with key facilities located about 300 metres from the erosion zone.
Allegations have been made regarding a Rs 4 crore embankment project, which workers say was limited and not properly executed.
“The protective measures have failed to withstand the river’s force,” a union member alleged, demanding accountability.
Labour bodies have urged immediate intervention, saying that 1,474 families depend on the estate and continued inaction could lead to a serious humanitarian situation.
