Guwahati: A man and a woman were killed while one of their friends was injured in a major road accident in Guwahati city on Diwali night on Thursday.

The deceased were identified as Deepit Dey, 19, and Kanamika Narzary, 22.

Deepit, a resident of Srinagar in Christian Basti, Guwahati, was a student of Guwahati Commerce College while Kanamika, hailing from Jharguri in Kokrajhar, was preparing for a competitive exam and attending coaching classes at an institute in Guwahati, said police.

The accident occurred at midnight when a black Scorpio, reportedly purchased just three days prior, collided head-on with a white Scorpio at Khanapara area in Guwahati.

The impact was so severe that the black Scorpio veered off the road, broke through a railing, and crashed into a nearby foot-over bridge before plummeting back onto the road.

Deepit Dey, 22, and Kanamika Narzary and their friend Neha Basumatary were occupants of the ill-fated black Scorpio.

All three were found to have bar entry tags, suggesting a night out before the fatal accident.

Neha, a resident of Gohpur, and was rushed to Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) for treatment. She is currently recovering.
