Assam Assembly winter session allows adjournment motion on Zubeen Garg’s death
Guwahati: On the first day of the Assam Assembly’s winter session, Tuesday (November 25, 2025), the Speaker permitted an adjournment motion on the death of singer Zubeen Garg, following a request from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
As the House convened for the day’s business after obituary references, Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia and Independent MLA Akhil Gogoi sought permission to move adjournment motions on the issue.
Before the Speaker, Biswajit Daimary, ruled on the motions, Chief Minister Sarma intervened, emphasizing that the government was equally concerned about the matter and requested the motion be allowed. He added that certain important bills and supplementary grants on the day’s agenda should also be placed in the House due to their urgency.
Sarma assured that no member from the Treasury benches would speak on the motion and that the government would present only its official response.
The Speaker approved the adjournment motion and directed that the bills and supplementary grants would be introduced after the discussion. He also urged members to avoid comments that could interfere with the ongoing investigation into Zubeen Garg’s death.
Zubeen Garg tragically passed away while swimming in the sea in Singapore on September 19, 2025. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Assam Police is actively probing the circumstances surrounding his death.
