Assam Assembly suspends two opposition MLAs for misconduct toward Deputy Speaker

Guwahati: Two opposition legislators were suspended from the Assam Assembly on Tuesday for the remainder of the winter session after the Privilege Committee held them responsible for misbehaving with Deputy Speaker Numal Momin during an incident on March 24, 2025.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary moved a resolution based on the committee’s report, which recommended action against Congress MLA Nurul Huda and Baghbor MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed, who is currently suspended from the party. The report concluded that Huda “attacked” the Deputy Speaker in the Assembly corridor, while Ahmed used “unparliamentary language” against him.

Patowary informed the House that the committee had advised suspension of both MLAs for the remaining days of the session, which began on Tuesday and will conclude on Saturday. The House adopted the resolution despite strong objections from Congress members.

Congress MLA Jakir Hussain Sikdar argued that the Opposition had requested CCTV footage from the corridor where the incident allegedly took place, but the government did not present any such evidence. “We cannot accept the report without video proof. Huda was only protesting along with other MLAs,” Sikdar asserted.

Speaker Biswajit Daimary dismissed the Opposition’s objections, stating that the Privilege Committee had already submitted its findings and the House should not reopen the matter.

The March incident had triggered sharp exchanges between the ruling coalition and the Opposition. The government accused Huda of physically confronting Deputy Speaker Momin during a protest in the Assembly corridor, a charge both Huda and the Congress had denied. In a separate episode the same month, Sherman Ali Ahmed had used an offensive term during a debate, which was later expunged from the records.
