Assam Assembly suspends MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed amid rising House tensions
Guwahati: Assam MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed was suspended from the Assembly for a short period on November 29 after he interrupted House proceedings during Question Hour.
The Congress MLA sought to raise a Point of Order, prompting Speaker Biswajit Daimary to ask him to specify the rule under which he wished to intervene. However, Ahmed continued speaking despite repeated instructions from the Chair and without citing the required rule, leading to his suspension.
Ahmed, along with Congress MLA Nurul Huda, had earlier been suspended for the entire Winter Session on Tuesday following recommendations of the Privilege Committee over an alleged misconduct involving Deputy Speaker Numal Momin.
Both lawmakers were reinstated on Friday after legislators across party lines appealed for reconsideration.
Ahmed’s fresh suspension on Saturday just a day after his reinstatement highlights the continued tensions in the Assembly during the ongoing Winter Session.
