Dibrugarh: Doctors at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh joined a nationwide strike called by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) to protest the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital.

The 24-hour strike, which commenced at 6 AM on Saturday, saw the suspension of non-emergency services, including outpatient departments. However, emergency care remained uninterrupted.

Medical professionals, including resident doctors, faculty, and students, participated in a protest march on the AMCH campus, carrying placards that demanded stringent punishment for the perpetrators and a central law to safeguard healthcare workers.

IMA Dibrugarh branch president Dr Gauri Shankar Borgohain and general secretary Dr Mriganka Baruah emphasized the need for exemplary punishment and stated that the strike would continue till 6 AM on Sunday.

The IMA has been advocating for a central law to protect doctors from violence and harassment in light of the rising attacks on medical professionals nationwide.
