Guwahati: Assam’s Raijor Dal chief and Sivasagar legislator Akhil Gogoi met Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leaders Sharad Pawar and Supriya Sule in Mumbai on Wednesday to discuss national political developments and India’s agrarian policies.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Gogoi said the conversation centred on "the urgent need to collectively resist the communal fascism that the BJP is spreading across the country."

He stated that Pawar, one of India’s most experienced political strategists, offered a detailed assessment of the current socio-political climate and the importance of building a stronger, united opposition to safeguard democratic values.

According to Gogoi, the meeting also focused on agriculture, a sector both leaders believe is at a critical stage.

The Raijor Dal chief said he sought Pawar’s insights on land reforms, the path to a second Green Revolution, and structural changes needed to protect farmers amid rising economic vulnerability.

Gogoi noted that Pawar shared the long history of transforming Baramati, once a drought-prone region, into one of Maharashtra’s most prosperous agricultural belts.

“He explained how scientific irrigation, cooperative movements and strong political will turned Baramati into an agricultural powerhouse. It is a model Assam and the Northeast can learn from,” Gogoi added.

Raijor Dal general secretary Russell Hussain was also present at the meeting, which Gogoi described as “extremely constructive and insightful.”

The interaction is being seen as part of a broader effort by Akhil Gogoi to strengthen alliances with regional and national leaders ahead of upcoming political battles, particularly on issues affecting farmers, democratic rights, and federal autonomy.
