Guwahati: Raijor Dal chief and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi on Thursday evening announced that he has submitted an affidavit to the one-man Judicial Commission probing the mysterious death of Assam's legendary singer Zubeen Garg.

Gogoi’s affidavit, submitted before Justice Soumitra Saikia’s commission in Chandmari, escalates political pressure on the Assam government to ensure transparency in the high-profile case.

The opposition leader has repeatedly accused the ruling BJP of shielding influential figures linked to the September 19 incident in Singapore, including event organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta.

The Judicial Commission, constituted on October 4 and expanded with four members on October 16, is the first such panel in Assam to oversee a police investigation for procedural lapses. It is accepting affidavits and evidence until November 21.

Simultaneously, the nine-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) under CID ADGP Munna Gupta continues its parallel inquiry.

Seven arrests have been made, including Mahanta, Garg’s manager, drummer, co-singer, and DSP Sandipan Garg.

The SIT has recorded over 50 statements, including from Singapore-based Assamese expatriates and singer Zublee Baruah.

A chargesheet incorporating murder charges is slated for filing by December 8, with financial probes by the ED and IT departments.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has assured a CBI inquiry if further needed.

Zubeen Garg, widely known as the ‘humming king,’ died on September 19, 2025, in Singapore, reportedly while swimming. He was in Singapore to perform at the North East India Festival.

His death at 52 has left fans in Assam, across India, and worldwide seeking clarity.
