Guwahati: Raijor Dal leader and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi on Tuesday said Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma avoided political discussion during his visit to the Sivasagar Legislative Assembly constituency.

Reacting to Sarma’s speech at an event held for distributing seed funds under the Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan (MMUA), Gogoi said he expected political remarks but none were made.

“I was waiting for him to say something political, but he did not,” Gogoi said.

He also claimed the Chief Minister failed to provide clear updates on several development promises, including the Total Ghor housing scheme, restoration of the Dikhou bridge, dredging of Jamunamukh, and the Dorika project.

According to Gogoi, Sarma also refrained from making any personal remarks against him. “Since he did not say anything about me, I have nothing more to add,” he said.

Expressing confidence in his party, Gogoi said Raijor Dal would contest and win the Sivasagar seat. He described Sivasagar as an important centre of Assamese identity and said he was proud to represent the constituency.

Taking a swipe at the Chief Minister, Gogoi alleged that Sarma wins elections from Jalukbari with the support of non-local voters and challenged him to contest from Sivasagar.

“You often speak about indigenous people. Come and contest from Sivasagar,” Gogoi said.

He also announced that Gyanashree Bora, an assistant professor from Goalpara College, has resigned from government service and will formally join Raijor Dal on February 5. Bora had earlier served as the party’s spokesperson and women’s wing president before joining academia in 2023.

Gogoi welcomed her return to active politics, saying young professionals joining public life is encouraging.

On welfare schemes, Gogoi said Raijor Dal would increase financial support if voted to power. He stated that the Orunodoi benefit would be raised from Rs 1,500 to Rs 3,000.
