Assam: Abandoned newborn found dead in Dhubri, public outrage erupts
Dhubri: The body of a newborn girl was found abandoned near Jogamaya Ghat on the banks of the Brahmaputra River in Dhubri on Saturday, prompting a police investigation into the incident. The incident has renewed concerns over child welfare and accountability.
Local sources said residents found the infant dead at the riverside shortly after a marine engine boat left the ghat for Salmara. The newborn still had a navel clip attached to the umbilical cord stump.
People noticed the body lying abandoned at the ghat moments after the boat’s departure. The sight stunned the area and drew a large crowd.
Angry and distressed locals gathered at the spot and immediately alerted the police. Dhubri Sadar Police rushed to the scene soon after.
Officer-in-Charge of Dhubri Sadar Police Station Pritam Das reached the ghat with a police team. Police secured the area and recovered the body. They sent the infant to Dhubri Medical College and Hospital for a post-mortem to determine the exact cause of death.
Police have launched an investigation and are examining all possible angles. They are checking the timing and passenger details of the Salmara-bound boat to see if it has any link to the abandonment of the newborn.
