Assam: 47 dogs rescued by police in Golaghat, five nabbed
Guwahati: At least 47 dogs have been rescued by the police in Golaghat, Assam since May 29.
Police sources said that based on inputs, they succeeded in recovering 22 dogs on Wednesday (May 29), followed by another 25 dogs on Friday (May 31).
Five persons suspected to be involved in alleged dog trafficking were arrested in connection with the operation.
The police also said that they seized three vehicles used for illegal transportation of the dogs.
It may be mentioned that some organisations and gangs allegedly steal dogs from Assam and smuggle them into other states for consumption.
Most of these dogs are smuggled to some areas of Nagaland while there are reports of them being smuggled to Mizoram as well.
Sources say that the illegal trade is not only limited to Indian states. Many incidents have been reported where dogs from India are smuggled into neighbouring countries.
Police are investigating the case further.
