Guwahati: A 40-day-old girl was allegedly killed by her mother in Barpeta Road, Assam on Sunday due to "financial constraints".

The accused woman was identified as Nazmina Khatun, a resident of the Dhupguri area in Barpeta, Assam.

According to reports, Khatun confessed to the crime after being apprehended by Simlaguri police.

The motive for the killing is suspected to be financial hardship, the police said.

Locals alleged that Khatun threw the sleeping infant into a nearby pond. The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation.

The victim's father, Abdul Aziz, speaking to the media, expressed his belief that financial strain drove his wife to this extreme act.

He demanded strict legal action against her.
