Police identified the deceased as Abhay Bhumij (33), Sanjay Kumar (36), Junas Munda (20), Agor Tanti (24), Rajni Nag (24), and Rahul Kumar (25).

Tinsukia Deputy Commissioner Swapneel Paul and Senior Superintendent of Police Mayank Kumar formally received the bodies at Tinsukia Medical College and Hospital.

Assam Minister Bimal Borah and Tinsukia MLA Sanjay Keshan were also present during the formal reception of the bodies.

“It is a tragic incident, and we are conducting a thorough investigation. So far, the police have arrested the contractor, and the name of another person has surfaced during the probe. He will be arrested soon. The police will investigate the matter and ensure justice for the families,” said Tinsukia Deputy Commissioner Swapneel Paul.

“Today, our teams retrieved 11 bodies from the accident site. Authorities suspended the rescue operation for the day and will resume it tomorrow morning at 6 am. Yesterday, we recovered six bodies and handed them over to the Tinsukia district administration,” Nang Chingni Choupoo, In-charge District Disaster Management Officer (DDMO), Anjaw district, also said.

Choupoo further added, “This is one of the most dangerous rescue operations. Personnel from the NDRF, BRO, the Indian Army, and the Anjaw district administration are actively engaged in the operation. The terrain is extremely difficult, and the risks are very high.”

The accident occurred on December 8, 2025, when a mini dumper carrying 22 persons, including the driver, plunged into a deep gorge on the HMC (Hayuliang–Metengliang–Chaglagam) road near Chaglagam Circle under Hayuliang Sub-Division in Anjaw district of Arunachal Pradesh.

The accident site lies about 60 km from Hayuliang towards Chaglagam, making access and retrieval operations extremely challenging.

The incident came to light after the lone survivor, Budheswor Deep, informed locals about the crash.

The families of the workers who died in the Anjaw truck accident will receive ex-gratia assistance of Rs 5 lakh from the Assam Chief Minister and Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister.
