AJP President Lurinjyoti Gogoi vows to defeat BJP in 2026 Assam Assembly polls
Guwahati: Declaring an uncompromising political battle against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi on Wednesday asserted that the BJP would be decisively defeated in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.
He was addressing a massive gathering during the party’s fifth central foundation day celebrations held at Chapakhowa in Sadiya, the far eastern corner of Tinsukia district in Upper Assam.
“In 2026, the BJP will be uprooted completely. The BJP has pushed Assamese society into a grave crisis of values and ideals. Our position is clear—with whatever strength we have, we will fight the BJP with full force,” said AJP president Gogoi.
Addressing the foundation day programme at historic Sadiya, Gogoi said the AJP would launch a renewed political struggle to safeguard Assam’s land, identity, culture, and political future, while upholding constitutional values and democracy. He alleged that the ideals laid down by Chaolung Su-Ka-Pha, Srimanta Sankardeva, and Madhavadeva had been pushed into crisis under BJP rule, and asserted that the party would leave no stone unturned to counter what he termed “communal politics”.
AJP general secretary Jagadish Bhuyan said the party had formally kicked off its campaign for the 2026 Assembly elections from Sadiya. Emphasising the need for Opposition unity, Bhuyan said anti-BJP parties had decided to field common candidates to prevent a division of votes. He also alleged that repeated betrayals in the name of nationalism and regionalism had eroded public trust, adding that the AJP was working to restore that confidence.
According to party leaders, the AJP has emerged as a significant political force within a short span. Bhuyan claimed that within 100 days of its formation, the party secured nearly seven lakh votes in its first electoral outing, reflecting growing public support for a regional alternative in Assam.
The fifth foundation day was observed with a day-long programme at the Ganasilpi Rajib Sadiya Coordination Ground in Chapakhowa. The party flag was hoisted by Gogoi, while Bhuyan paid tributes to martyrs. Floral tributes were also offered to Ganasilpi Rajib Sadiya, artist Gajen Naran, and cultural icon Zubeen Garg. The programme was inaugurated by AJP working president Rajen Gohain.
An open meeting, chaired by Gogoi and attended by over 5,000 party workers and supporters, witnessed sharp attacks on both the Central and State governments. Senior AJP leaders targeted what they described as the BJP’s “double-engine” dispensation, accusing it of failing to protect Assam’s national interests.
Marking five years of its journey, AJP leaders said the party’s movement was not merely political, but a broader struggle to restore Assamese self-respect, assert indigenous rights, and work towards building a self-reliant Assam.
