Assam: United opposition to meet PM over CAA, sends memorandum to President
GUWAHATI: Congress-led 16-party United Opposition Forum (UoF) in Assam will soon meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi seeking his intervention to repeal the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019 in the aftermath of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s announcement of the implementation of the act in the state.
A delegation of UOF which called on Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria at Raj Bhawan here on Thursday urged him to arrange a meeting with the Prime Minister on the very issue.
Kataria told the delegation to send a petition to the PMO seeking the PM’s appointment and said he would try to give them an engagement with PM Modi.
Leaders of the opposition also submitted a memorandum addressed to President Droupadi Murmu demanding repeal of the draconian act.

The memorandum stated that the people of the state have rejected the act from the day of its introduction in the Parliament.
“The people of Assam have been opposing the unconstitutional CAA from the day of its introduction in the Parliament. Surprisingly, the ruling BJP taking advantage of its majority on both houses of Parliament passed the Bill ignoring the sentiments of the people of Assam.”
“This Act is not only constitutional but also is going to nullify the historic Assam Accord of 1985 by putting in danger the history, culture, social fabric, economy and the very identity of the Assamese people. Therefore we the opposition parties urge you to intervene in this most sensitive matter and direct the Union government to desist from its decision to implement the CAA in Assam,” the memorandum stated.

“If the government pays no heed to it, we the opposition political parties and the people of Assam will have no alternative except to go for a democratic mass movement to compel the government to repeal the act,” the memorandum added.
A meeting of UoF on Wednesday decided to revive anti-CAA protest on the day of its imposition in the state.
The memorandum was signed by APCC president Bhupen Kumar Borah, Assam Trinamool Congress president Ripun Bora, AAP Assam president Bhaben Choudhury, Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi, Assam Jatiya Parishad president Lurinjyoti Gogoi, CPI-M state secretary Suprakash Talukdar, CPI state secretary Kanak Gogoi, AIFB state secretary Mihir Nandi, CPI-ML state secretary Pankaj Das, Jatiya Dal, Assam president Ajit Kumar Bhuyan, Shiv Sena (UBT) president Ramnarayan Singh, NCP state secretary Parash Baruah, SP state president Abdul Aziz and PLP president Charan Deka.
