Guwahati: The Silchar Lok Sabha constituency is one of the 14 Lok Sabha constituencies in Assam. From 1951 to 1971, the area under it was referred to as the Cachar constituency. The constituency covers the entirety of Cachar district in the Barak Valley.

Situated within the Cachar district, it stands as the second largest city in Assam both in terms of area and population, with a population of 1,677,821 according to the 2011 census.

According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), the total electorate counts in the Silchar Lok Sabha Constituency stood at 12,57,459, with 6,38635 male voters, 6,18762 female voters, and 62 voters identifying as the third gender.

The Silchar parliamentary constituency comprises seven Assembly segments, namely Silchar, Sonai, Dholai, Udharbond, Lakhipur, Barkhola and Katigora.

Notably, the BJP and the Congress are the predominant parties in this constituency and prior to 1991, there have been all Congress victories apart from 1974 when CPIM won.

Since 1991, it has either been the BJP or Congress that has won from the Silchar constituency. In 2019, Dr. Rajdeep Roy of BJP won whereas in 2014 Sushmita Dev of Congress was victorious.

In the upcoming election, the BJP has nominated Parimal Suklabaidya, while the Congress has put forth Surjya Kanta Sarkar as their candidate for the Silchar Lok Sabha Constituency.

Dr. Rajdeep Roy of the BJP won the Silchar constituency in the Lok Sabha elections 2019, securing 4,99414 votes while 4,17818 votes were polled in favour of Sushmita Dev of the INC. Dr. Roy won with a massive margin of 81596.

In the Lok Sabha elections in 2014, Sushmita Dev of Congress Party won with 3,36,426 votes. The runner-up was Kabindra Purkayastha of the BJP party. The margin of victory was: 35,267 votes.
