SILCHAR: Seven individuals, including a court employee, received life imprisonment for a murder case dating back seven years in Hailakandi district of Assam.

In a significant verdict, the district and session judge of Hailakandi in Assam, Sanjoy Hazarika, pronounced life sentences for seven individuals involved in a murder case from seven years ago.

The judgement, delivered under sessions case 10/2018, was handed down on Monday (February 26).

The convicted individuals have been sentenced to life imprisonment under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), along with an additional three years of imprisonment under Section 148.

Additionally, a fine of Rs 20,000 has been imposed on each convict, with defaulters facing an additional six months of imprisonment.

The sentenced individuals are Kamal Uddin Mazumdar, a court process server, along with Fakrul Islam Laskar, Anwar Hussain Laskar, Asab Uddin Mazumdar, Nezam Uddin Mazumdar, Anam Uddin Mazumdar, and Ainul Haque Laskar.

The court considered the statements of 16 witnesses, including an additional district commissioner and a medical officer, during the trial.

The murder took place in Nishchintapur village of Hailakandi district in Assam on August 8, 2017, when a group of assailants attacked shopkeeper Abdul Basit Mazumdar with a sharp weapon around 7:30 pm.

Upon hearing the commotion, the victim's son rushed him to Silchar Medical College and Hospital in Cachar district of Assam, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Subsequently, the deceased's wife, Jubeda Bibi Mazumdar, filed a case at Hailakandi Sadar police station in Assam.

The case, numbered 476/2017, was registered under sections 147, 148, 149, 341, 326, 302, and 34 of the IPC.

Following an investigation, the Assam police arrested the accused individuals and presented them before the court for trial.
