Assam secures 8 medals in junior category of talent search boxing competition

Guwahati: Six girls and two boys from Assam on Saturday advanced to the semifinals of the ongoing REC National Open Talent Search Boxing Championship in Guwahati, Assam securing at least bronze medals.

In the junior boys' 44 kg category, Prashant Rajbongshi and Dipankar Das won their quarterfinal bouts ensuring a podium finish at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) regional centre's indoor stadium.

On the girls' side, Ranga Patgiri (44 kg), Bitoli Pegu (46 kg), Sunena Akhtar Amin and Suman Devi (52 kg), Hina Limbo (54 kg), and Bobby Boro (57 kg) also secured their spots in the semifinals in the junior category.

A total of 12 boxers from Assam will compete in various weight categories with the aim of securing more medals.

Notably, the competition will conclude on September 30. All boxers who reach the quarterfinals will qualify to compete in the national final round, while medal winners will receive prize money.

On the other hand, the men's and women's elite and youth categories were successfully completed earlier this month.

Assam secured a total of 16 medals – two gold, six silver and eight bronze - in various weight categories across the elite and youth categories.

The national final round will be held in Haryana from October 6, 2024.
