Guwahati: The Assam government has announced the merger of the Secondary Education Board of Assam (SEBA) and Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) into a unified Assam State School Education Board.

The decision, outlined in an official notification signed by the Assam Governor, aims to align school education with the demands of the 21st century.

To oversee this new entity, R. C. Jain, a retired IAS officer, has been appointed as the Chairman of the Assam State School Education Board for a period of three years or until he reaches the age of 70, whichever comes first.

Jain's appointment also marks the end of his tenure as the Chairman of SEBA, effective immediately.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that it is a crucial step towards elevating the state's education sector.

"This initiative aligns with the National Education Policy 2020 and will help us create a more cohesive and effective education system," Sarma said in a tweet.

The Assam State School Education Board Act, 2024, which provides the legal framework for the merger, outlines the responsibilities and powers of the new board.

Jain's remuneration as Chairman will be determined following the provisions of the Act.
