Assam soon to have massive Rs 25,000-crore semiconductor packaging plant

GUWAHATI: A Rs 25,000-crore semiconductor packaging plant will soon be set up in the Northeast state of Assam.

This was informed by union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Thursday (February 15) in Guwahati while addressing a Digital India Future Skills summit in Guwahati.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar announced, “Assam is on the brink of setting up a semiconductor packaging plant worth Rs 25,000 crore, which has been proposed by the Tata Group.”

It may be mentioned here that the Tata Group has been planning to set up a semiconductor processing plant at an investment of Rs 40,000 crore.

Notably, Tata Electronics had submitted the application for setting up an electronic centre at Jagiroad in Assam.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had mentioned that the Tata Group initiated discussions with his government regarding the semiconductor assembly and packaging plant.

Subsequently, they approached the central government for the required permissions.

He stated to news agency PTI, "If all progresses smoothly, we anticipate a significant investment in the state, fostering a conducive environment for industrial growth. We remain in communication with the Centre and are optimistic about receiving final approval within the next month or two."
