Assam: Purnima Devi Barman gets Whitley Gold Award for Hargila conservation

Guwahati: Conservation biologist Purnima Devi Barman has been awarded the prestigious Whitley Gold Award 2024, often referred to as the 'Green Oscar.'

This recognition highlights the remarkable contributions of a dedicated woman leading community-driven efforts for biodiversity conservation.

Barman's tireless work focuses on preserving the endangered greater adjutant stork, locally called Hargila in Assam, one of the world's rarest stork species. This award signifies a significant achievement not just for Barman but also for Assam, India, and women's role in global biodiversity conservation.

An immensely humbled Barman expressed that the award truly belongs to the women in the communities who have been her pillars of strength.

"This award is a message from the women of our country to the world, showcasing how dedication and commitment can drive conservation efforts," said Barman, who has been invited for a felicitation tomorrow by the Indian High Commission in London.

Barman's remarkable efforts have mobilized local women, particularly those from her key conservation project site at Dadara-Pachariya in Assam's Kamrup district.

Her work has garnered worldwide attention for its successful community-based approach to the conservation of this endangered species.

Celebrating Dr. Barman's feat, Aaranyak's Secretary General and CEO, Dr. Bibhab Kumar Talukdar, said, "Dr. Purnima Devi Barman, associated with Aaranyak since 2002, has filled us all with immense pride.
