JORHAT: Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Jorhat in Assam on Saturday (March 09), where he participated in two significant events showcasing the rich cultural heritage and historical importance of the Northeast state.

During his visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the statue of Lachit Borphukan, a revered figure in Assam's history, and also took part in the traditional ritual of ‘tarpan’.

The unveiling of the statue of Lachit Borphukan, a legendary Ahom general and military commander known for his valour and leadership, marked a significant moment for the people of Assam.

Following the unveiling of the statue, Prime Minister Modi participated in the ‘tarpan’ ritual.

The Prime Minister unveiled the 'Statue of Valour' at the Lachit Barphukan Maidam Development Project located near Teok in Hollongapar.

Modi, arriving at Jorhat in Assam from Arunachal Pradesh via helicopter, adorned himself in traditional Ahom attire, complete with traditional headgear.

PM Modi took part in an Ahom ritual as part of the statue unveiling ceremony.

Accompanying the Prime Minister during the event was Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The statue, crafted by renowned sculptor Ram Vanji Sutar, stands at a towering height of 84 feet, with an additional pedestal of 41 feet, bringing the total structure to an impressive 125 feet.

Former President Ram Nath Kovind laid the foundation stone of the statue in February 2022.

Lachit Borphukan, a legendary army commander of the Ahom kingdom (1228-1826), is celebrated for his pivotal role in the 1671 “Battle of Saraighat”.

This historic battle saw Borphukan's exceptional leadership thwart a prolonged attempt by the formidable Mughal forces, led by Raja Ramsingh-I, to regain control of Assam.
