Assam: One feared dead after boat capsizes in Brahmaputra near Majuli

Guwahati: A man has been feared to have died after a boat reportedly capsized in the river Brahmaputra near Majuli, Assam on Sunday.

According to initial reports, the boat was travelling near Kordoiguri in Lower Majuli when it suddenly was hit by waves.

The boat immediately capsized and all four persons on board including some cattle fell into the river.

While the people near the shore managed to rescue three of them, one person went missing in the river.

Locals identified the missing person as Utpal Saikia, a teacher at a private school.

It has been hours since he went missing and locals have suspected that he may have died by now.

However, rescue teams are trying to find Saikia.

The others identified as Tirtha Bhuyan, Hahiram Bora, and Bichitra Bora—were rescued alive.

An investigation is also being carried out into the incident.
