Assam: Newborn found dead near pond in Mankachar

Guwahati: A newborn was found dead on the bank of a pond in Gokulpur village, South Salmara-Mankachar district of Assam on Saturday.

The dead infant was found by locals and they alerted the police immediately.

The infant, estimated to be 2-3 days old, was found abandoned near the pond, said a police official. 

The official said that the cause of death remains unclear, with initial suggestions leaning towards drowning due to the location.

However, a post-mortem examination is awaited to find the exact cause of death.

Inquiries were made to trace the parents of the infant but they could not be found.

Police are investigating all angles into the incident including abandonment and child theft.
