Assam: MoS Pabitra Margherita visits flood-affected areas in Tinsukia district

Digboi: In a proactive response to the recent floods affecting various locations under the Margherita revenue circle, the Minister of State Pabitra Margherita, led a comprehensive assessment visit to relief camps consoling the hapless, affected and displaced flood-hit victims.

The minister who was accompanied by local legislator Bhaskar Sharma, IAS Parikshit Thoudam, the Sub Divisional Officer (Civil), Gyan Jyoti Dutta the Circle Officer and Executive Magistrate, meticulously evaluated the distribution of essential relief items and the availability of basic amenities for flood-affected individuals.

The MoS along with the team of support services inspected the relief camps at Makumkila area and Margherita Town, where he closely monitored the distribution process of  Gratuitous Relief, vital supplies such as water bottles, candles, and mosquito coils.

Emphasis was placed on ensuring the adequacy and efficiency of relief efforts to meet the immediate needs of those sheltered in these camps.

Meanwhile, as per official inputs, the situation upstream showed a decline in water levels earlier on Thursday allowing some families to return to their homes, the mid-stream and downstream areas continue to experience a gradual surge in their levels as both Buridehing and Tirap rivers were flowing above the danger mark by 2.55 meters by Friday night.

Authorities earlier had conducted necessary evacuations in these regions to ensure the safety of residents.

Rescue operations led by the Fire & Emergency Service Squads of Margherita, Tinsukia, and Ledo have been actively underway over the past 24 hours to effectively minimize the disastrous impact of the furious flood upon human beings.

The operations have focused on evacuating residents from flood-affected areas across Margherita and Jagun regions.

50 individuals from the Margherita Alubari areas were rescued while 29 persons were evacuated from Rampur Sonowal Gaon in the Jagun area.

Similarly,  eight individuals from Bihari Basti in Jagun were rescued safely while 50 individuals belonging to Mulang No. 2 in Ketetong areas of Margherita were brought offshore.

Simultaneously, the Civil administration gearing on a war footing continued ensuring the safety and rehabilitation of the affected victims through various mechanisms, the assessment was also carried out at various other locations including Lama Gaon LP School, No.6 Dirok LP School, Khagori Pather LP School, Sati Joymati LP School, Namdang Bashbari LP School, Borfakial LP School, and Manmawmukh LP School.

The inspections chiefly focused on verifying the provision of distribution of GR and essential amenities crucial for the well-being of flood-displaced residents.

Sufficient care was also extended beyond relief supplies, with the Veterinary Department of Margherita coordinating with local officials and village leaders to distribute animal fodder, ensuring livestock welfare amidst the crisis.

Moreover, to enhance the relief operations, health camps were strategically established in coordination with the Department of Health at multiple relief camp sites. These camps provided essential medical assistance to flood victims, addressing their health needs effectively.

Currently, 30 relief camps remain operational with additional camps established as per the evolving requirements, demonstrating a sustained commitment to supporting those affected by the floods.

The collective efforts of various governmental departments and agencies underscore a united approach towards disaster relief and recovery, aiming to alleviate the hardships faced by the flood-affected communities in Margherita.

It may be added here that a sense of relief has settled over the flood-affected regions as water levels in both rivers, Buridehing and Tirap have shown a steady decline since 8 am on Saturday.

Earlier on Tuesday one of the ailing victims died at a designated relief camp at Makumkila.
