SHILLONG: 80 percent of the issues relating to the vexed Assam-Meghalaya border dispute have been effectively resolved.

This was announced by Meghalaya cabinet minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, AL Hek.

Hek emphasized ongoing efforts to address the remaining 20 percent of the Assam-Meghalaya border dispute through peaceful means.

The dispute, spanning over five decades, encompasses 12 contentious points along the 885 km border shared by Assam and Meghalaya, including areas such as Upper Tarabari, Gazang Reserve Forest and Hahim, among others.

A notable breakthrough was achieved with the signing of an agreement to settle six of the twelve disputed sectors along the Assam-Meghalaya inter-state border.

Originating in 1972 following Meghalaya’s separation from Assam, the conflict has resulted in numerous clashes, claiming the lives of at least 12 individuals.

Despite recent fatalities, including six deaths in November 2022, and confrontations on September 26 last year, concerted efforts persist to address the longstanding border tensions.
