Imphal: Sainik School, Goalpara, Assam unveiled a bust of their courageous alumnus, Late Major Ngangom Joydutta Singh from Manipur, recipient of the Vir Chakra (Posthumous).

Major Singh, a resident of Thangmeiband D M College Gate, Meisnam Leikai,in Manipuri’s  Imphal West, was a cadet at Sainik School, Goalpara from class V and continued through his higher secondary exams.

This initiative, spearheaded by the school authorities and the Sainik School Goalpara Old Boys' Association, honored his memory and sacrifice.

Captain Ngangom Subadani Devi (Retd), Major Singh's wife, unveiled the bust at the school's library block on April 7. The ceremony included tributes from the Principal, faculty members, family members, and alumni.

Following his graduation from the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, Major Singh completed a year of training at the Indian Military Academy before being commissioned into the Gorkha Regiment in 1977.

His dedication to service is further highlighted by his wife's distinguished career, culminating in her retirement as a Captain with the NCC.

Major Singh's bravery shone brightly during his deployment with the Indian Peacekeeping Force (IPKF) in Sri Lanka in October 1987.

While leading his company as a commander, he displayed exceptional leadership and courage under heavy enemy fire.

He heroically covered the retreat of para commandos and the 13th Sikh LI. In a final act of selfless valor, when ammunition ran low, Major Singh and two others charged the enemy with khukris, engaging them in hand-to-hand combat.

They inflicted significant casualties but ultimately made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
