Assam: Man dies in rhino attack near Pobitora

Guwahati: A man died after being attacked by a rhino on the fringes of Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Morigaon district of Assam on Sunday morning.

The incident took place at around 10 am as the middle-aged man on his motorbike was passing through the Hadugor area when the rhino suddenly attacked him.

The man with his motorcycle soon fell into a ditch with the rhino constantly hitting him.

Though the onlookers tried to chase the rhino away, it continued to hit the man.

As the group of people got closer, the rhino stopped attacking the man not before leaving him critically injured.  

The villagers soon informed the forest officials and the local police but did not wait for them to arrive and rushed the injured to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him dead.

The police later reached the spot and began their investigation. The whole incident was filmed by an onlooker on his mobile phone.

The locals said they had warned the biker not to cross the area as a rhino was strolling along the road.

However, he went ahead and the charging rhino attacked him.

According to the locals, rhinos straying from its habitat to human settlements is very common and such incidents often happens.

The deceased has been identified as Saddam Hussain, a resident of Kosutoli area of Sonapur in Kamrup Metropolitan district of Assam.
