TINSUKIA: Locals residing in Tinsukia and Doomdooma in Assam have demanded widening of the national highway 37 stretch between the two towns.

Around 30-km stretch of the national highway 37 between Tinsukia and Doomdooma is two-lane.

According to locals, the Tinsukia-Doomdooma stretch of the national highway, “which is narrow”, witnesses heavy movement of vehicles throughout the day.

People from all walks of life, use the road for day to day activities.

Moreover, the road has also been prone to accidents in recent times.

“Narrow road and high vehicular movement has been the prime reason for frequent accidents and traffic jams,” said a local resident.

Local residents have urged the Assam government to consider widening of the national highway stretch between Tinsukia and Doomdooma in Assam.

“Ministers and other government delegates rarely travel along the Tinsukia-Doomdooma highway stretch. So, it is understandable that they do not feel the necessity of widening of the road here,” said a resident.

He added: “But, as locals, we face hardships on a daily basis while communicating between Tinsukia and Doomdooma along this 30-km stretch.”

“We urge the Assam government to take up measures to widen the national highway between Tinsukia and Doomdooma,” another local resident said.

It may be mentioned here that the Centre has been undertaking several key infrastructure development programmes in Assam.

Recently, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met union road transport minister Nitin Gadkari and discussed upcoming infrastructure projects in the state.
