Assam govt to hand over two ULFA-I bomb threat cases to NIA

Guwahati: The Assam Police has decided to transfer two crucial cases related to the ULFA-I’s Independence Day bomb threats to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

The move comes after the militant group claimed responsibility for planting explosives at 25 locations across Assam on August 15.

Director General of Police (DGP) Gyanendra Pratap Singh announced that a total of 10 cases have been registered in connection with the threats. The cases pertaining to Guwahati and Lakhimpur have been deemed significant enough to warrant a federal investigation.

Law enforcement agencies have made substantial progress in the investigation, including the arrest of four suspects in Sivasagar. One of these individuals is believed to be a key player in the plot.

DGP Singh emphasized that the ULFA-I's actions are aimed at disrupting Assam's development trajectory. He reiterated the state's commitment to maintaining law and order.

In a separate incident, a bomb threat at a Guwahati shopping mall on August 19 was found to be a hoax, part of a recent spate of similar false alarms across India.

The ULFA-I has admitted to planting explosives but claimed that a technical glitch prevented their detonation.

The Assam Police has recovered explosives from several locations and has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to delve deeper into the matter.
