GUWAHATI: The BJP-led Assam government is mulling to table a bill on the uniform civil code (UCC) in the state’s assembly soon.

This was informed by Assam education minister Ranoj Pegu on Thursday (February 08) while speaking to the media.

“This (uniform civil code) issue has been under discussion for a long time in Assam. Very soon a bill will be tabled in the assembly,” Pegu said.

It may be mentioned here that Uttarakhand, on Wednesday (February 07), became the first state in India to have passed a bill on uniform civil code (UCC).

UCC refers to a common set of laws that are applicable to all Indian citizens, and is not based on religion in dealing with marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption, among other personal matters.

Earlier, the Assam government had claimed that the Northeast state will become the second state in the country to implement the controversial law.

Passing of the UCC bill in the Uttarakhand assembly is being seen a move that could encourage other BJP-ruled states to follow suit.
