Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court has granted interim bail to Mizo gospel singer Bethsy Lalrinsangi and her husband, BCM-recognized evangelist Lalhriatpuia Chawngthu, who were facing allegations of forced religious conversion in Assam.

The couple, who had conducted a gospel meeting at Mount Olive School in Kokrajhar district, had been accused of "coercing children into religious conversion."

A case was registered against them at Kazigaon police station in Assam's Kokrajhar district based on an FIR filed by individuals affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Justice Arun Dev Choudhury of the Gauhati High Court granted the couple interim bail on Tuesday, directing them to appear before Assam police within ten days to get their statements recorded.

Earlier, the couple had appeared in the Kokrajhar District Court to face the charges, which had been labeled as "Child Conversion." However, their previous plea for interim bail was denied.

Advocate Vikram Rajkhowa represented the petitioners in the case in the high court.

The case against the couple has sparked widespread debate and concerns about religious freedom in Assam.
