Assam floods: Seven more fatalities reported, over 1.7 million people still affected
Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam remains dire as seven additional fatalities were reported on Tuesday, bringing the total death toll to 92 for this year's flood, landslides, and storms.
Despite a decline in the number of affected individuals to 1.77 million, the situation remains critical, as per the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
According to the ASDMA bulletin, the latest deaths occurred in Cachar (2), Dhubri, Dhemaji, South Salmara, Nagaon, and Sivasagar districts of Assam.
The deluge alone has claimed 79 lives, with landslides and storms contributing to the remaining fatalities.
The flood's impact has slightly decreased, with 1,717,599 people affected across 26 districts, down from 1,880,700 in 27 districts recorded last Friday.
However, 38,870.3 hectares of cropland are still submerged, compared to 49,014.06 hectares on Monday.
Dhubri remains the worst-hit district, with 354,045 residents affected, followed by Cachar (181,545), Sivasagar (136,547), Barpeta (116,074), and Golaghat (109,475).
Relief efforts are ongoing, with 48,021 people taking shelter in 507 relief camps and 104,665 individuals receiving aid materials.
Kaziranga National Park, known for its wildlife, has also been severely impacted.
To date, 159 animals have died due to drowning and during treatment, while 133 animals have been rescued. The flood has affected 1,366,829 animals, and 20 were washed away by the deluge.
The infrastructure damage across Assam includes 94 roads, three bridges, 26 houses, and six embankments.
The Brahmaputra River continues to flow above the danger level at Nimatighat, Tezpur, Guwahati, and Dhubri.
Other rivers exceeding the danger mark are Burhi Dihing at Chenimari (Dibrugarh), Dikhou at Sivasagar, Disang at Nanglamuraghat (Sivasagar), Kopili at Dharamtul (Nagaon), and Kushiara at Karimganj.
