Assam floods: Kamrup-Metro district administration issues urgent advisory

GUWAHATI: The Kamrup-Metro district administration in Assam has issued an urgent advisory as the Brahmaputra River continues to flow above its danger level of 49.68 meters.

In light of the increasing water levels, residents in the vicinity of the riverfront, riverbanks, and areas close to the river are urged to stay alert for potential breaches of riverbanks, embankments, or overflows.

To protect life and property, the Kamrup-Metro district administration in Assam has outlined the following precautions for the general public:

Prohibition on boating and fishing: The plying of country boats and fishing activities in and around the Brahmaputra River are prohibited until further notice.

Avoid driving or walking through flowing water: This can be extremely risky and should be avoided.

Stay away from floodwaters: These waters may be contaminated with sewage, chemicals, or other hazards.

Do not swim or cross flooded areas: Avoid attempting to swim or cross any flooded river, stream, or flowing waterbody.

Protect vulnerable populations: Children and the elderly are advised to remain in safe locations.

Be cautious of wildlife: Watch out for snakes, animals, and other hazards in floodwaters.

Avoid electrical hazards: Do not touch or approach any submerged transformers, inverters, electrical posts or wires.

Rescue precautions: Only trained individuals should attempt to rescue anyone who falls into the water. Otherwise, seek help from trained personnel like the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) or Village Defense Parties (VDPs).

Stay Informed: Keep up-to-date with local news and emergency alerts.

Follow instructions from authorities: Adhere to directions from local authorities and emergency responders.

Evacuation orders: Follow any evacuation orders issued by authorities promptly.

Report Hazards: Be vigilant and report any issues to government authorities, including the DC Office, Circle Office, local police stations, or the Water Resources Department for immediate intervention.

The advisory also warns that violating these directives may result in legal action under relevant sections of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, and other applicable laws.
