Assam floods: Indian Army presses its Rescue and Relief columns into service

Guwahati: In view of the sharp rise in water levels triggered by heavy rainfall in the Northeastern states, the Rescue and Relief columns of the Indian Army have been pressed into service to evacuate the stranded people to safer places, and provide them with crucial assistance.

The Indian Army has so far successfully rescued over 50 people from the flood-affected Bor Fakial village of Margherita in Assam’s Tinsukia district, a defence spokesperson said. 

Despite inclement weather, the soldiers remained committed towards the rescue and relief operations working round-the-clock, he said.

The Jawans provided emergency supplies, including food, water, medicines and other essential items, to the displaced people taking refuge in temporary camps and shelters while working in close coordination with the civil administration, he added.

The Indian Army is continuously monitoring the situation, and has kept extra personnel and resources ready to speed up the rescue and relief operations if the need arises, the spokesperson asserted.
