Guwahati: Amid the ongoing flood crisis in Assam, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has voiced his deep concerns and criticised the central government’s handling of the situation.

Speaking to the media on Thursday (July 04), Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi highlighted the need for more effective action from both the central and Assam governments.

“I had said that it is a matter of great concern, I am very concerned and I think the central government should also be concerned,” said Assam Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi.

He added: “I am aware that PM Modi talked to the Assam CM, but I am worried about whether the chief minister himself knows the real truth or not.”

The Assam Congress MP stated that for the past decade, the Jal Shakti department under the BJP government has been repeatedly awarding embankment projects to contractors who fail to deliver quality work.

“For the last ten years, we have been seeing that the Jal Shakti department of the BJP government is repeatedly giving embankment projects to contractors who build broken embankments or are not able to do their work properly while building embankments, but even after that, the same contractor gets work again and again,” the Assam Congress MP stated.

Gaurav Gogoi’s comments come as Assam faces severe flooding, affecting thousands of residents and causing widespread damage to property and infrastructure across the state.

The ineffective embankments have exacerbated the situation, leading to breaches and further inundation of already vulnerable areas.

The Assam Congress leader called for immediate and stringent measures to address the flood crisis and ensure that only competent contractors are awarded such crucial projects in the future.
