Assam floods: Atul Bora assesses situation in Morigaon and Nagaon

MORIGAON: Assam minister Atul Bora visited the flood-affected Morigaon district on Thursday (July 04), where over 190 villages are grappling with the aftermath of severe flooding.

Interacting with affected residents taking shelter on the embankments in Bhuragaon area, Assam minister Atul Bora highlighted the ongoing challenges despite receding water levels.

“The water level of the Brahmaputra River is slowly receding in Morigaon district, but the flood situation remains grim,” stated Atul Bora.

He expressed concern over the loss of life, noting that three people have tragically lost their lives due to the floods in Assam.

“As per the instructions of the Assam chief minister, I visited Morigaon to assess the flood situation first-hand. The conditions are still severe. A total of 28 districts have been affected by this flood,” he said.

“Yesterday, the state cabinet, chaired by the CM, directed us to visit the flood-affected areas of Morigaon and Nagaon districts,” Assam minister Atul Bora stated.

Bora further said, “In Morigaon district alone, 55,459 people have been affected by the deluge, with 194 villages submerged. The floodwaters have inundated 12,963 hectares of crop area.”

A local resident whose village remains submerged lamented, “This year, the floodwaters came suddenly in just one day. Many people have lost their homes and belongings.”

“Tents and shelters have been set up, and the administration is providing essential supplies like drinking water and food.”

“The flooding of the Brahmaputra River has been a recurring challenge for us,” the resident continued.

“The people here are facing significant hardship.”

Assam minister Atul Bora assured continued government support, stating, “Our administration is committed to providing relief materials and necessary assistance to the flood-affected people.”

“We will work closely with the district authorities to ensure that relief reaches those in need promptly,” the Assam minister stated.

“I instructed the officers to closely monitor the distribution of relief materials provided by the administration to the flood victims,” he added.

Assam minister Atul Bora also addressed the severe impact of the second wave of floods in the state, particularly affecting Nagaon district.

Speaking after a review meeting at the Nagaon DC office, Assam minister Atul Bora provided critical updates on the extent of damage and outlined immediate measures for relief and recovery.

“This year, the second wave of floods has affected 34,046 people across 88 villages under Samaguri, Kampur, Dhing, Kaliabor, and Raha revenue circles of Nagaon district,” stated Atul Bora.

“A total of 2531 hectares of agricultural land have been inundated, and 25,987 livestock have also been adversely affected.”

During the review meeting, Assam minister Atul Bora directed concerned officials to expedite relief and rescue operations.

“I have instructed the officers to swiftly initiate steps for providing compensation to the affected people,” he stated.

“Our immediate focus is on preventing further damage to crops, ensuring the supply of cattle feed, and providing proper treatment for livestock.”

The Assam minister further stated that the “state government is fully committed to assisting the affected communities during this challenging time”.
