North Lakhimpur: The illegal trade of fake gold has shown signs of reviving in the Bangalmora region of Lakhimpur, Assam with police recovering eight fake gold biscuits and three boat-shaped bars during a raid on Monday night.

Acting on a tip-off, a team from North Lakhimpur Sadar Police Station conducted a search operation in a Bangalmora household, leading to the arrests of Babul Hussain and Safiqul Hussain.

This development comes after a period of relative calm following a crackdown on the fake gold and counterfeit currency trade in the area, sparked by the mysterious death of police officer Junmoni Rabha in 2023 and subsequent personnel changes.

"It may be mentioned that the infamous trade of fake gold and counterfeit currency of Lakhimpur's Bangalmora came down significantly following a vigorous campaign by police after the case of the mysterious death of a police officer Junmoni Rabha in 2023 and the transfer of some senior officials," a source said.

A source stated, "But last night's operation by police again indicates a resurgence of the illicit activity."
