Guwahati: Tension briefly flared in Assam’s Bijni on Tuesday after workers of the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) accused an NDA candidate of attempting to distribute cash, prompting police intervention.

The allegation was made against NDA candidate Arup Kumar Dey, who was reportedly at the residence of former Executive Member late Singharam Boro in No. 1 Vetagaon when the incident unfolded.

According to UPPL workers, Dey had gone to the residence to distribute money, triggering a heated exchange at the spot.

The party appealed to political leaders and workers to avoid actions that could disturb peace in the area, saying Bijni has a long history of communal harmony and peaceful coexistence.

However, the family of late Singharam Boro and workers of the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) denied the allegation, maintaining that Dey’s visit was personal and unrelated to any cash distribution.

They said Dey had longstanding ties with the family and had only visited the house as a courtesy.

BPF workers also alleged that Dey was confined inside the residence and that the gate was locked during the confrontation, describing the episode as unfortunate.

Police, including the Additional Superintendent of Police of Chirang district and other local officials, reached the spot and brought the situation under control.

No violence was reported, and authorities have not confirmed any wrongdoing.

The matter remains disputed between the two sides at the time of filing this report.
