Assam Elections 2026: India–Bhutan border in Tamulpur under restrictions, essential travel allowed
Guwahati: Cross-border movement at the India–Bhutan border in Tamulpur district will remain restricted from Monday, April 6, until polling concludes on April 9, following Election Commission directions for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.
District authorities, led by District Magistrate and District Election Officer Simi Karan, have instructed that all land border crossings be closed during this period, citing Section 163(2) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023.
The move limits movement of both pedestrians and vehicles to maintain the integrity of the electoral process and prevent any unlawful interference. Such measures are routinely applied along international borders during elections.
Exceptions will be made for certain groups. Individuals entering India from Bhutan for urgent medical needs, tourists already in Bhutan with valid documentation, and travelers heading to Bhutan with approved papers will be allowed.
Transport vehicles carrying perishable essential goods can pass after clearance at designated checkpoints. Residents registered as voters in the 43-Tamulpur (ST) and 44-Goreswar Assembly segments may enter the district during the election period upon presenting valid identification and necessary documents.
Authorities have directed locals, officials, and security teams to adhere to the restrictions to maintain election safety and order.
