Assam Assembly polls 2026: 40 counting centres finalised, 25 CRPF companies guard EVMs
Guwahati: Ahead of the announcement of results for the Assam Legislative Assembly Elections 2026 on May 4, Chief Electoral Officer Anurag Goyal said all arrangements for the counting process have been completed across the state.
Addressing the media, Goyal said counting of votes will begin at 8:00 am on May 4 at 40 centres across 35 districts. Kokrajhar, Tinsukia and Jorhat will each have two counting centres, while Nagaon will have three.He added that all necessary arrangements have been made to ensure smooth and transparent counting
Goyal noted that the state recorded its highest voter turnout compared to the last five Assembly elections. Districts such as Barpeta, Dhubri, Goalpara, Bongaigaon and South Salmara registered the highest polling percentages.
On security, Goyal said EVMs have been stored in strong rooms under 24x7 CCTV surveillance, with 25 CRPF companies deployed for security, while candidates’ representatives are present at the sites to keep watch.
In comparison, turnout in the previous five Assembly elections stood at 75.16% in 2001, 75.72% in 2006, 76.05% in 2011, 84.64% in 2016 and 82.02% in 2021. He also said that the three constituencies with the lowest turnout were located in Guwahati.
For the counting process, 126 observers and one IAS officer for each constituency have been appointed. Each counting table will be supervised by designated personnel, with a total of 5,981 officials and 2,348 micr-observers.
Recounting will be allowed only in cases of very narrow margins, with postal ballots to be verified personally by the Returning Officer. Goyal also stressed that victory processions must strictly adhere to law and order guidelines. He further highlighted that around 7.3 million Gen Z voters aged 18–29 participated, and 15 polling stations were managed by persons with disabilities to promote inclusivity.
