Guwahati: In a shocking turn of events, an Assam government official's driver has been arrested for the murder of a local fruit and vegetable vendor in Guwahati.

The incident, initially reported as a road accident, has now been revealed as a premeditated crime fueled by jealousy and revenge, said Guwahati Police Commissioner Diganta Barah.

The incident occurred on the night of October 3 near Pragjyotish College under Bharalumukh police station in Guwahati. The victim, Taibuddin Ahmed, 35, was found seriously injured on the road and was rushed to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries the following day.

"Initial investigations led police to believe the incident was a hit-and-run. However, as we deeper into the case, we discovered that the government vehicle involved in the accident, a Bolero with "Government of Assam" written on its bonnet, belonged to the National Vector Borne Diseases Control Program," Barah said.

He said upon further inquiry, the police identified the vehicle's user as the Joint Director of the program, who was attending a meeting at the Assam Water Centre in Basistha. The driver, Lal Hussain Ali, 43, was apprehended from the office and confessed to the crime.

During interrogation, Ali revealed that he had been harboring resentment towards Taibuddin Ahmed due to the latter's affair with his wife, Anjuma Begum.

The victim had been living with Anjuma Begum in a rented house in Shantipur, under Bharalumukh police station.

"The accused had been trying to reconcile with his wife, but the victim's affair had created a rift between them," said Police Commissioner Barah. "Driven by jealousy and anger, the accused planned to eliminate the victim," he added.

The accused's wife, Anjuma Begum, had left her husband to live with Taibuddin Ahmed. The victim, a fruit and vegetable vendor, had been involved in multiple relationships and was currently living with Anjuma Begum.

Accused Lal Hussain Ali also married twice and Anjuma Begum was his second wife.

On the night of the crime, Ali, who was driving his boss's vehicle, waited near Shantipur main road, anticipating the victim's return from work.

When Taibuddin Ahmed appeared, Ali deliberately rammed his vehicle into the victim, dragging him for approximately 400 meters before fleeing the scene.

The Guwahati police have arrested Lal Hussain Ali and seized the vehicle used in the crime. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the BNS, and further investigations are underway.
