DIBRUGARH: Assam director general of police (DGP), GP Singh, conducted a visit to Dibrugarh central jail on Tuesday (February 20) to assess security measures following the recovery of spy cameras, smartphones, and other prohibited items from the National Security Act (NSA) cell where Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh and his nine associates are housed.

Accompanied by Dibrugarh district commissioner (DC) Bikram Kairi and superintendent of police (SP) Shwetank Mishra, the Assam DGP inspected the premises of Dibrugarh central jail.

During routine inspection on February 17, authorities had seized several items including smartphones with SIM cards, keypad phones, TV remotes with keyboards, spy-cam pens, pen drives, bluetooth headphones and speakers and smartwatches.

Amritpal Singh was transferred to Dibrugarh central jail on April 23, 2024, after being arrested by Punjab police from Moga district.

Notably, he has been charged under the National Security Act (NSA).

Additionally, Amritpal Singh's nine associates, also detained at Dibrugarh jail in Assam, have been charged under NSA.

These associates include: Daljeet Singh Kalsi, Papalpreet Singh, Kulwant Singh Dhaliwal, Varinder Singh Johal, Gurmeet Singh Bukkanwala, Harjit Singh, Bhagwant Singh, Basant Singh, and Gurinderpal Singh Aujla.

Following the inspection, Amritpal Singh's lawyer, Rajdev Singh, addressed reporters outside Dibrugarh central jail.

He stated that Amritpal Singh had informed him about the installation of spy cameras in their barracks and bathroom without the knowledge of jail authorities.

Singh emphasized that nothing incriminating was found in their possession, and the entire incident was fabricated.

He further mentioned that all detainees, including Amritpal Singh, have been on a hunger strike since February 16, protesting the invasion of their privacy without the jail officials' consent.
