Guwahati: The Congress after winning three Lok Sabha seats in Assam said that the win indicated that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's countdown to exit the state's politics has begun.

The Congress claimed that they won despite what it described as a "manipulated delimitation" exercise.

The party claimed this marks the beginning of the end for Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh speaking to the media said that the party secured 37.48 per cent of votes in Assam, nearly doubling its previous vote share and narrowly surpassing the BJP's 37.43%.

Ramesh said, "In spite of the manipulated delimitation exercise in Assam, the Indian National Congress retained three MP seats."

He also pointed out that Congress leader Pradyut Bordoloi's victory margin increased by nearly 200,000 votes.

The Congress leader further claimed that despite Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma holding 25 public meetings to challenge Gaurav Gogoi, he (Gaurav Gogoi) triumphed with a margin of over 1 lakh votes.

Furthermore, Congress' Rakibul Hussain won the Dhubri Lok Sabha seat with a "historic margin", defeating AIUDF supremo and three-time MP Badruddin Ajmal by a record 1,012,476 votes.

Ramesh declared, "Time to go, Mukhya Mantri! The countdown to Himanta Biswa Sarma’s exit has begun."

It may be mentioned that Congress won three of the 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam, while the BJP secured nine, and regional parties claimed two seats.
