GUWAHATI: In a pointed critique of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Assam Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP from Jorhat constituency, Gaurav Gogoi, expressed doubt that Modi would heed the advice of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat regarding the ongoing conflict in Manipur.

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, on Monday (June 10), stressed on the need to move past election rhetoric and prioritize resolving the Manipur conflict.

During an RSS event in Nagpur, Bhagwat stated that Manipur has been awaiting peace for over a year, and the situation in the state demands immediate attention.

“It has been over a year since Manipur has been waiting for peace. The state remained peaceful for the last 10 years, but suddenly, gun culture has taken over. It is important to resolve the conflict as a priority,” Bhagwat said.

Reacting to the RSS chief’s remarks, Assam Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi said: “I do not expect Prime Minister Modi to pay any attention to the words of RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat.”

“Prime Minister Modi will avoid Manipur, misuse law enforcement agencies and try to bend the Indian constitution,” he added.

The Assam Congress MP further stated: “Thankfully the people have chosen the INDIA alliance to speak up on its behalf and defend the Indian Parliament and the constitution.”

It may be mentioned here that the conflict in Manipur, which erupted on May 03 last year following a “Tribal Solidarity March” organized in the hill districts to protest the majority Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, resulted in the deaths of over 200 people.

The violence has been primarily between the Kuki and Meitei communities in Manipur.
