Assam CM assesses flood situation in Dibrugarh

Dibrugarh: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took stock of the flood situation in Dibrugarh district on Friday (July 05).

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited several flood-affected areas in Dibrugarh district to gauge the impact of the ongoing deluge.

CM Sarma, accompanied by key officials and local legislators, navigated through the submerged HS Road and Mahalaya Road in Dibrugarh town of Assam, engaging directly with residents affected by the floodwaters.

The Assam chief minister pledged government efforts to clear drains to facilitate unimpeded water flow.

During his inspection, the Assam CM also surveyed the breach of the ring bund at Khowang, evaluating the extent of the damage and speaking with affected residents.

He directed concerned authorities to prioritize the reconstruction of the ring bund and reinforce the primary embankment to prevent further breaches.

Acknowledging the plight of those displaced by the floods, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma visited two relief camps.

At Pithubor Girls' Higher Secondary School, housing 173 individuals, he ensured provisions of essential supplies and instructed the district commissioner to oversee medical care and other necessities.

Similarly, at Khowang Higher Secondary School, accommodating 380 flood-affected people, the Assam chief minister assured expedited measures to repair damaged homes alongside ongoing relief efforts.

Accompanying CM Sarma were Assam panchayat and rural development minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass, water resources minister Pijush Hazarika, and local MLAs Teros Goala and Taranga Gogoi, who coordinated relief operations and interacted with affected residents.

Later in the day, CM Sarma visited the breach point at Ghumtal, Tengakhat, caused by the Burhidihing River, where he assessed the situation first-hand.

Boarding a boat to navigate the flooded area, he instructed the Dibrugarh DC to implement emergency relief measures promptly, including the immediate reinforcement of the breach with geo bags.

At the relief camp established at Tengakhat College, accommodating 299 individuals, the Assam CM inspected facilities and instructed officials to ensure the continuous availability of relief materials, with special attention to the needs of vulnerable groups.

The Assam chief minister concluded his visit reaffirming the government's commitment to expedite rehabilitation efforts and provide necessary support to those affected by the floods, emphasizing a proactive approach to mitigate the impact of natural disasters on local communities.
