Assam: CBI nabs CWC junior engineer for accepting bribe

Guwahati: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has apprehended a Junior Engineer (JE) of the Central Water Commission (CWC) of Silchar in Cachar district of Assam for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 12,000 from a car vendor.

The Central investigating agency in a press statement on Wednesday (September 18, 2024) said it registered a case earlier in the day against the accused, Ayush Kumar, and other government officials on allegations of demanding bribe from the car vendor in order to clear his pending dues of Rs 1.55 lakh against hiring of his vehicle by the CWC, Silchar.

On the basis of the complaint, the federal agency laid a trap and subsequently caught the accused red-handed while accepting the bribe of Rs 12,000 from the complainant, it added.  

The statement further said the CBI carried out searches at various locations and further investigation into the matter is ongoing.
