Guwahati: The Assam cabinet approved the renaming of Rupsi airport in Dhubri district to honour Bodo social reformer Gurudev Kalicharan Brahma.

This move is intended to recognise Gurudev Kalicharan Brahma’s influential contributions to the advancement of Bodo society.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated, “Renaming Rupsi Airport after Gurudev Kalicharan Brahma is a tribute to his seminal contributions to Bodo society.”

The proposal will be presented to the assembly for a resolution, which will then be forwarded to the central government for final approval.

In addition to the airport renaming, the cabinet made several other key decisions:

Creation of Secretary Posts: The Assam cabinet approved the creation of 474 secretary posts for Village Development Councils and Committees in the Sixth Schedule areas.

The Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) will receive 420 posts, Dima Hasao will get 28, and Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong will receive 26 posts.

Ration Cards for Migrant and Unorganised Workers: The cabinet sanctioned ration cards for six lakh migrant and unorganised workers.

There are approximately 12 lakh such workers from Assam registered on the e-shram portal, and the cabinet's decision will extend benefits to those who have not yet received ration cards.

MoU with Centre for Effective Governance of Indian States (CEGIS): The Assam cabinet approved a Memorandum of Understanding between the Assam Administrative Staff College and CEGIS, New Delhi, to enhance government officers' capacity through training and research opportunities.

Assam Right to Public Services (Amendment) Bill, 2024: The cabinet approved the Assam Right to Public Services (Amendment) Bill, 2024, aimed at strengthening the delivery and appeal mechanism of public services.

This bill will be presented in the autumn session of the Assam assembly.

Re-appointment of Junior Engineers: The cabinet approved the re-appointment of 115 junior engineers in the Public Works (Roads) Department to ensure the smooth implementation of ongoing projects.
